Heck No – Joe Heck Says It’s Not His Job to Create Jobs |
|
Unemployed Nevadans Need Someone Who Will Fight on Their Side
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 21, 2010
Henderson, NV – With the recent news that Nevada’s unemployment has increased, it is clear that the people of District Three need a representative who is going to fight to create jobs and put people back to work. Senator Joe Heck, however, shares the Angle belief that it’s not their job to create jobs. Despite the fact that Senator Heck has benefited from multiple government contracts, collecting as much as $1.1 million in taxpayer money, he said “the role of Congress is not to create jobs.” (Nevada Newsmakers, 5/5/10)
“At a time when Nevadans are desperate to find work, they need someone who is going to fight on their side to bring good jobs to Southern Nevada,” Titus campaign manager Matt Lydon said. “While Dina Titus has worked hard to try to pull Nevada out of the deepest recession in a generation, Senator Heck has said he doesn’t think it would be his job to help put people back to work. Dina has voted to bring billions of dollars to Nevada that has helped save teacher and construction jobs and supported investments in renewable energy that can create 17,000 new jobs in Nevada. Compare that record to Senator Heck's view that Nevadans are on their own during this difficult time, and the people of CD3 have a clear choice this November.” |

The Heck-Angle Agenda -- Leaving Nevada Behind |
|
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, July 12, 2010
Over the weekend, Senator Joe Heck gave a ringing endorsement for Sharron Angle and her radical agenda that he has fully embraced. At the Nevada Republican Party Convention, Senator Heck threw his support behind Angle in what was no surprise given that he has trumpeted the same philosophy that calls for the privatization of Social Security and he believes it is not the role of Congress to create jobs.
“Senator Heck has made it clear that he is rallying around Sharron Angle and going all in behind an agenda that would gamble seniors’ Social Security in the stock market while lining the pockets of Wall Street bankers,” Titus campaign manager Matt Lydon said. “At a time when so many Nevadans are struggling to find work the people of District Three cannot afford the core Heck-Angle belief that it would not be their job to create jobs while in Congress. They need a fighter like Dina Titus who has stood by their side, taking on the big banks, big oil, and big insurance companies that Senator Heck has protected his whole career.”
On Saturday, Senator Heck said, “we have to rally around a slate of candidates up and down the ticket – Sharron Angle all the way down.” (Las Vegas Review-Journal, 7/11/10) In a recent interview, Senator Heck called for the privatization of Social Security, saying, “I believe that any individual should have the right to voluntarily take their portion of Social Security withholding and invest it.” (Nevada News and Views, 5/4/10) In addition, Senator Heck declared, “the role of Congress is not to create jobs.” (Nevada Newsmakers, 5/5/10)

Titus Statement on Administration Approval of Nevada’s Plan for Foreclosure Relief Funds |
Washington – Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District commended the approval of Nevada’s state plan by the Obama administration. The plan allocates $102.8 million in funds to address foreclosure prevention in Nevada. Titus, whose office was one of the first in the nation to assist homeowners in fighting foreclosures on an individual basis, has long called on the Obama administration to provide more relief for states such as Nevada that have suffered the most in the foreclosure crisis. “The administration’s approval of this plan is a critical step forward that will make much-needed funds available to help families stay in their homes. As ground zero for the foreclosure crisis, District Three has been particularly hard hit and in need of these additional resources,” Congresswoman Titus said. “I am pleased that the Nevada plan incorporates provisions that I recommended to best address this crisis that has devastated our community. Using these funds for mortgage forgiveness and the reduction of principal will help provide short-term assistance and long-term stability. While these funds will make an impact here in Nevada, I will continue my efforts to fight on behalf of homeowners who have been ignored or taken advantage of by the banks that have contributed to this housing crisis. Every day my office receives calls from families in District Three who are scared of losing their home. It is critical that the state moves swiftly to implement this important plan and put these funds to work. With too many families at risk of losing their home, we don’t have a moment to lose.” Under the Nevada plan approved by the Obama administration, the state will create a mortgage modification program combining two elements, forgiveness and forbearance, the goal being to reduce principal to less than 115 percent of loan-to-value and lowering payments to 31 percent of debt-to-income. Additionally, under the plan Nevada will offer help in reducing and eliminating second liens with earned forgiveness over a three-year period. Lastly, under the plan allowances will be provided allowances for appraisal and transaction fees, moving fees, a legal allowance for up to three months, and a combination of incentives for borrowers and services to facilitate short sales. |

Titus statement on filing for re-election |
Friday, March 5, 2010 Henderson, NV – Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District released the following statement today after filing for reelection. “It has been an honor to represent the people of District Three and serve as their voice as we face one of the most challenging times in Nevada’s recent history. When I was elected over a year ago, our nation and our state faced the deepest recession in a generation and my district has long been ground zero for our country’s foreclosure crisis. That is why I have devoted my time and the resources of my office to helping families in District Three save their homes. Whether it’s calling a lender who has ignored good faith efforts to make payments or holding housing workshops to help homeowners get the resources they need, I have been committed to fighting for the people of Southern Nevada during this difficult time. “I know the path back to economic recovery has not been easy for Nevadans and there are bound to be more obstacles along the way. With families struggling to make ends meet, it is essential that we focus on putting people back to work. Job creation will continue to be my top priority while fighting against the special interests in Washington that are only interested in preserving the status quo, because Nevada’s families can afford nothing less.” # # # |

LCV Action Fund Endorses Dina Titus for Re-Election in Nevada’s 3rd District Washington, DC - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, today announced its endorsement of Dina Titus (NV-03) for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. “In just one term in office, Congresswoman Titus has been a strong champion of legislation that will bring thousands of clean energy jobs to Nevada, cut carbon pollution and reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “We are proud to endorse Congresswoman Titus for re-election because she has fought to make Nevada a leader in building the clean energy economy we need to keep America’s competitive edge.” Rep. Titus voted for the House-passed American Clean Energy and Security Act that would help create over 10,500 clean energy jobs in Nevada*, reduce carbon pollution and increase energy independence. She also supported the single largest investment in clean energy in history – more than $80 billion for energy efficiency, renewable energy and public transit in the economic recovery package, with substantial investments going to Nevada’s 3rd district to help build a 21st-century electrical grid and retrofit homes and offices for energy efficiency. "I am honored to receive the support of the League of Conservation Voters and the members they represent in the Silver State," said Congresswoman Titus. "With unemployment at a record high in Southern Nevada, it is critical that we focus our efforts on creating good jobs that will put people back to work. Creating jobs locally will require innovation in Nevada’s growing renewable energy industries. By investing in our abundant renewable resources such as sun, wind, and geothermal, we can create clean energy jobs that will not only diversify our economy, but protect our environment as well.” LCV Action Fund endorsed Rep. Dina Titus in 2008. As state Senate Minority Leader, Titus led the charge to develop solar and wind energy in Nevada and drove legislation to require green power standards for utility companies. In 2007, Titus was honored with the Nevada Renewable Energy Leadership Award. She strongly supported legislation that established a target of generating 20% of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2015. "Congresswoman Dina Titus supports building a clean energy economy that will put Nevadans back to work while reducing harmful carbon pollution,” said Scot Rutledge, Executive Director of the Nevada Conservation League. “She has been a tireless advocate for both the environment and Nevada workers for almost three decades and we look forward to her continued leadership." |

The Nevada Faculty Alliance political action committee announces its endorsement of Rep. Dina Titus for re-election in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional district.
The Alliance expressed its continuing support for Titus, a longtime NFA member during her nearly three decades of teaching at UNLV. NFA state president Scott Huber, a biology professor at Truckee Meadows Community College, called her “a leading voice for improving the quality of education in Southern Nevada as a state senator and in Congress.”
He noted that the Alliance based its endorsement primarily on her record in Congress as well as her long history in the Nevada legislature to make a college education more affordable and accessible.
Titus supported the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, the most important act in a generation to help students and families pay for college.
- The act will result in more than $60 million in Pell Grants for southern Nevada college students in her district and another $1 million a year for the next five years to support Nevada students completing degrees.
- The Act will also make a nearly $19 million investment in Nevada’s community colleges.
Titus supported the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which sent $397 million in education funds to Nevada, of which approximately $180 million went to Nevada’s higher education budget.
- This money helped keep needed courses available for hard-pressed students and mitigate program cuts and staff layoffs.
- According to the state of Nevada’s Recovery website, this Act preserved at least 1500 Higher Education staff and support jobs in 2009.
- The bill also helped working families pay for college by creating a new American Opportunity tuition tax credit of $2,500 and by increasing Pell Grants by $500 per qualifying family.
“I have worked alongside Dina Titus on the faculty at UNLV for more than 10 years,” said Gregory Brown, NFA PAC co-chair and a UNLV History professor. “I’ve seen how hard she works for her students and her community. We know she’s working just as hard for us in Congress.”
In accepting the endorsement, Representative Titus commented, “Education is vital to the future success of southern Nevada. To attract good jobs of tomorrow to Nevada, we must have a skilled and educated workforce that is prepared to get the job done. For 30 years I have dedicated my professional life to educating Nevada's young adults and the next generation of leaders.”
“I was proud to support the single largest investment in college financial aid to help students and families pay for college,” she added, “and I will continue to improve education at all levels so Nevada's young adults are prepared to compete in the global economy.”
The Nevada Faculty Alliance is the Nevada affiliate of the American Association of University Professors; since 1984, it has advocated on behalf of the faculty and professional staff on all eight campuses of the Nevada System of Higher Education. The Nevada Faculty Alliance PAC endorses candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to supporting quality affordable higher education and principles of academic freedom and effective governance at Nevada’s colleges and universities. |
