New York Bomb Attempt Raises Awareness in Las Vegas

KLAS Channel 8

May 3, 2008

Just like New York City, Las Vegas is one of the world's top tourist destinations. Nearly 40 million people visit Las Vegas each year. That is why authorities must be prepared for an attack like the one that almost happened in New York's Times Square, where a suspect tried to set off a car bomb. The SUV was packed with gasoline, propane and fertilizer. If the attempt succeeded, it would have caused numerous casualties in one of the country's busiest areas.

The bombing attempt in New York has Nevada officials concerned, including U.S. Rep. Dina Titus. "It's a wake-up call and a reminder to us that when we're in tourist areas, like Las Vegas with soft targets, that we need to be informed," she said. "We need to be ready. We need to have the resources to respond."

Waking up the Democrats

Las Vegas Weekly

By Ken Miller - April 21, 2010

It doesn’t have the membership of the Tea Party. it doesn’t have the funding. It doesn’t have the catchy slogans, the sound bites, the easily digested gobs of O’Reilly, Beck and Hannity.

At first glance, all that might appear to be going for the Coffee Party is that it has a catchy name. But this nonprofit organization, started by filmmaker Annabel Park earlier this year, cannot endorse any candidates, and its overall impact on politics is certainly iffy. As a force that’s going to get headlines and command attention, this particular party appears a bit … decaffeinated.

Not everyone agrees with that sentiment. Congresswoman Dina Titus recently took time out from her schedule to spend 30 minutes talking to about two dozen attendees at a “Coffee With Congress” get-together at the Las Vegas home of Liza Powell—and some of them weren’t even from her district. It was a subdued affair, more akin to a Sunday social than a political movement—a coffee pot on a table in the back yard, along with bottled water and soft drinks, and folding chairs set up at the edge of a pool. Titus discussed her recent victory with health-care reform, anger and frustration were expressed from the gallery over the utter absence of bipartisanship, and Titus was blunt about executives of bailed-out companies getting million-dollar bonuses: “They should be in jail.”

Titus’ office morphs into housing counseling center
Las Vegas Sun

By Lisa Mascaro - April 18, 2010

Washington — William Palacios had nowhere to turn the day he walked into Democratic Rep. Dina Titus’ office in Las Vegas.

The bank was preparing to foreclose on his modest, three-bedroom home — a house he had bought for $250,000 four years before on a block where they were now selling for $90,000.

The office staff remembers the 43-year-old casino maintenance worker walking in, without an appointment, his 11-year-old son in tow.

Health care finally done, Titus eager to pivot back to jobs

Las Vegas Review-Journal

By Steve Tetreault - March 24, 2010

WASHINGTON -- While most of the Democrats who voted for health care reform celebrated at a White House signing ceremony Tuesday morning, Rep. Dina Titus took a pass.

Instead, the freshman congresswoman stayed behind in her office for a series of meetings with visitors from Nevada, including groups of health care professionals and teachers, and to prepare remarks for a luncheon with Jewish voters from the state.

A few hours later, Titus took a turn presiding over the House chamber as Democrats turned back to their "jobs agenda," advancing a $5.7 billion bill that includes money for job training grants and small-business loans.

Dina Titus introduces worker safety oversight bill

Las Vegas Sun

By Michael Mishak - March 16, 2010

Rep. Dina Titus introduced a bill this morning that would give the federal government more flexibility in its oversight of state workplace safety programs.

The reform legislation is important to Nevada because of the state's poor track record when it comes to keeping workers safe on the job -- and follows House hearings last year on the failings of the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Dina Titus goes on the attack in defense of jobless benefits

Las Vegas Sun

By Lisa Mascaro - March 2, 2010

Washington — Ignoring that she’s a freshman congresswoman and he’s a two-term senator, Democratic Rep. Dina Titus leveled a broadside against Sen. Jim Bunning of Kentucky, who is holding up an extension of unemployment benefits for out-of-work Nevadans.

For days, Bunning has blocked a vote on extending jobless benefits, saying he believes the aid should not be added to the national debt.

But as he makes his case, nearly 20,000 out-of-work Nevadans, among more than 1 million Americans nationwide, will run out of benefits this month unless the program is extended. Nearly 176,000 Nevadans are out of work.

“Sen. Bunning’s obstructionist delay tactics are a perfect example of why the American people think Washington is broken,” Titus said.

With Southern Nevada residents “facing high unemployment, a foreclosure crisis and skyrocketing health care costs, they want to see elected officials working together,” she said. “Unfortunately, one Republican in the Senate is standing in the way.”
